SANGENJAYA TOKYO

DIVE BARS AND BACKSTREETS.

A night in Sankaku Chitai, the postwar bar maze that's what Golden Gai wants to be, with a rooftop for sunset first. Two stops from Shibuya, and every stop has a Google Maps link.

Sangenjaya, or Sancha if you're a local, is where Tokyo goes to drink cheap and eat well, two stops from Shibuya. Its heart is Sankaku Chitai, the triangle zone: a postwar maze of tiny bars and restaurants where most places seat 6 to 8 people. It's what Golden Gai wants to be, and it's 4 to 5 minutes from Shibuya on the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line.

Is Sangenjaya worth visiting at night?

Yes, night is the whole point. My guide calls it dive bars and backstreets, and the triangle zone feels like stepping back in time. This is where you go to drink where locals actually go.

What is Sankaku Chitai?

Sankaku Chitai (三角地帯) means "triangle zone." It's the local nickname for the wedge of land where Setagaya-dori and Route 246 split, and the alleys start the moment you leave the station by the Setagaya-dori exit.

The area was bombed in the war, and a black market grew up on the burned-out ground right after it. That history is still in the layout: narrow lanes that loop back on each other, and at the point of the triangle the Echo Nakamise shopping street, which has been going since 1950 and still runs like the old market.

The places are tiny. A lot of them are around 10 square meters, counter seats only and owner-run, and they're full once 7 or 8 people sit down. Old-timers share the alleys with newer spots opened by younger owners. My advice: pick a door and see what happens.

It won't look like this forever. A group preparing a redevelopment of the triangle formed in 2019, and the plans are still being worked out, so go sooner rather than later.

Sangenjaya or Golden Gai?

Sangenjaya. Golden Gai used to be amazing, but it's on the basic tour circuit now and I don't go anymore. Sankaku Chitai is what Golden Gai wants to be. I wrote up why I skip Golden Gai on its own page.

How should I spend a night in Sangenjaya?

Get there before sunset, start on the rooftop, eat, then lose yourself in the triangle and finish late. This is the order I'd do it in.

FROM SANGEN-JAYA STATION, SETAGAYA-DORI EXIT

  1. Head up to A-Bridge, a rooftop bar about 4 minutes from the station, before the sun goes down. Go early for golden hour and stay for the vibe. It's closed on Wednesdays.
  2. Eat at Sushi Daidokoya, conveyor belt sushi in the alley behind the McDonald's, open 11:00 to 23:00 every day.
  3. Walk into Sankaku Chitai, right by the Setagaya-dori exit. Wander the alleys and pick a door.
  4. If you want somewhere to start, Oomoriya opens at 17:30 and Senta at 18:00 from Wednesday to Sunday.
  5. Finish at Shokudo Osaka, which opens at 22:00 Monday to Saturday and serves your grandmother's Japanese food until 9:30 the next morning.
  6. Or walk 15 minutes to Ikejiri-Ohashi, the next stop toward Shibuya, and combine the two in one night.

Is there anything to do in Sangenjaya in the daytime?

My guide is mostly about the night here, but there's a coworking space if you need to get work done, and the Echo Nakamise shopping street at the point of the triangle is the old market still running.
