SHIMOKITAZAWA TOKYO

WHAT WILLIAMSBURG WISHES IT WAS.

Shimokita is Tokyo's indie neighborhood. Vintage shops, tiny theaters, craft beer, and stupid good abura soba.

Shimokitazawa, or Shimokita for short, is Tokyo's indie neighborhood: vintage shops, tiny theaters, craft beer and stupid good abura soba, in Setagaya City on the west side of the city. It sits on two train lines, the Odakyu Line (about 7 minutes from Shinjuku) and the Keio Inokashira Line from Shibuya. The station area was rebuilt after the Odakyu tracks went underground in 2013, and the neighborhood somehow kept its soul.

What is Shimokitazawa like?

My one-line version is "what Williamsburg wishes it was." It's the neighborhood people go to for vintage clothes, small theaters and live music, with craft beer and cheap noodles in between. It's also good for antiques, and it has a thriving literary and music scene.

The station area changed a lot recently. The Odakyu tracks used to run at street level; they moved underground in 2013, and the land they left behind is now a strip of new low-rise buildings and walkways. Reload sits on the old Odakyu line, and Mikan Shimokita is a complex just outside the station. My guide's verdict on all of it: a massive redevelopment that somehow kept the neighborhood's soul.

Vintage and thrift shopping in Shimokitazawa

Flamingo Shimokitazawa

The vintage store everyone talks about. Curated Americana, denim and leather over multiple floors, and worth the hype. There's more than one Flamingo in Shimokitazawa.

Tokyo's secondhand shops tend to have very specific taste. One focuses on older American clothing, another on vintage designer pieces, another on one decade, and in neighborhoods like Shimokitazawa you can walk from one shop into the next and find a completely different selection. That curation is a big part of why thrifting in Japan feels different.

My honest take: Shimokita specializes in American thrift, and a lot of it is the kind of stuff you'd find at Goodwill back home, like obscure college hoodies, for way more money. For thrifting, I like Koenji better. Shimokita is the famous one, but Koenji, on the JR Chuo Line, has better thrifting in my opinion, and that's where my thrifting day plan goes.

Where to eat and drink in Shimokitazawa

Tokyo Aburagumi Sohonten Shimokitazawa

Criminally underrated abura soba. Abura soba means "oil noodles": ramen noodles with no broth, dressed in a sauce at the bottom of the bowl. Mix it up, add the vinegar and chili oil, and it's life-changing for under ¥1,000.

The standing bars. Tiny standing bars are scattered through the back streets. Pick one that looks full, because that's how you know it's good.

Bonus Track Shimokitazawa

A newer complex near the station with indie shops, a bookstore, coffee and a record store. It feels like a small-town main street that somehow ended up in Tokyo. It's 15 shops around a plaza, and each shop keeps its own hours.

Is Shimokitazawa a good place to stay?

It works as a base close to both big hubs: about 7 minutes to Shinjuku on the Odakyu Line, and 3 to 4 minutes to Shibuya on a Keio Inokashira Line express.

Shimokitazawa Station on Google Maps

What is Shimokitazawa like?

It's Tokyo's indie neighborhood, known for vintage clothing, small theaters, live music and cheap, good food, a few minutes by train from Shinjuku and Shibuya. The station area was rebuilt recently but kept its character.

Where is Shimokitazawa, and what ward is it in?

It's in Setagaya City, on the west side of Tokyo, about 7 minutes from Shinjuku on the Odakyu Line.

How do I get to Shimokitazawa from Shinjuku or Shibuya?

From Shinjuku, take the Odakyu Line (about 7 minutes). From Shibuya, take the Keio Inokashira Line toward Kichijoji and get off at Shimokitazawa (3 to 4 minutes on an express).

What is Shimokitazawa known for?

Vintage clothing, antiques, music and a literary scene. For me it's vintage, tiny theaters, craft beer and abura soba.

Is Shimokitazawa worth visiting?

Yes, especially for vintage shopping and an afternoon of food and drinks. Like every neighborhood in my guide, it's a short train ride from Shinjuku or Shibuya. If thrifting is your main reason, also go to Koenji, which I like better for it.

Is Shimokitazawa a good place to stay?

It works as a base: Shinjuku is about 7 minutes away on the Odakyu Line and Shibuya is on the Keio Inokashira Line. My guide rates Shimokita's prices as $–$$ (cheap to mid-range).

Is Shimokitazawa expensive?

Not especially. My guide puts it at $–$$, and the abura soba is under ¥1,000. If you're thrifting, though, I find Koenji better.
